I hate writing, but YAWP sounds cool. When are you going to
do other arts?
First off, we're sorry you have such a negative outlook on writing and
we encourage you to at least see how we facilitate the workshops and
see the fun we do have! A possible photography and/or video program
is in the works for Fall 2003. Until then, come check us out, and
let us know what other interests you'd like to pursue in YAWP.
I don't really consider myself a writer, but YAWP sounds cool.
Can I still join?
Of course. Although the program uses writing as the main focus, we will
be working in different forms of writing and combining those with other
arts such as music and photography. All students will still be expected to
keep an open mind and be open to see where their writing takes them.
I want to bring my friend. My mom wants to embarrass me and
see what you're about. Can they come?
Of course. We encourage you to bring your parents and your friends!
Please RSVP! We welcome all to speak to us and interrogate us as to our
intentions- creating a FREE youth program for Asians to gallivant around
our offices exploring such crazy notions as culture, history, community,
family, literacy, creative expression and the arts!
Who are you to be creating this YAWP? You think you are somebody?
Yes, we are. We are all members of the Asian American Artists Collective -
Chicago, and represent a diverse, accomplished and experienced cross-
section of APIA artists, teachers, educators, youth advocates, organizers
and activists. The YAWP staff work in social service agencies, the Chicago
Public School system, established arts agencies, own their own businesses,
make a living in the arts, and are community leaders in their own right.
I noticed the staff page. You sure have a lot of teachers for so
few students. Why is that? Is there a maximum # of students for
the class?
When YAWP was formed in the summer 2002, there was such an overwhelming
response not only from established Asian American artists and educators,
but also college students wanting to participate as teaching assistants and
interns. Not wanting to turn anyone away, we realized that this group could
also help contribute as mentors/buddies for YAWP students. We expect the
Summer 2003 session to have a maximum of 20 students, so RSVP early. Each
session has two Teaching Artists and two Teaching Assistants.
I'm (insert age between 13 - 19 here) years old. Will this be right for me?
Writing is a life-long process, as is the exploration of identity, history and culture.
Whether you are a freshmen in high school or a sophomore in college, you play
a vital part in this creation of Asian America. Check us out!
Hey, but I'm in college. I'm so over high school. Will this be right for me?
First off, get over yourself. Now, RSVP and come check us out!
I'm (insert Asian ethnicity here). I'm not sure about this whole 'Asian,
Asian American' stuff. Will this be right for me?
Of course. YAWP is about finding out what all this 'stuff' means, together, as an
empowered community.
I'm not Asian, but I want to learn more about Asian American History.
I'm a great writer. Can I join?
Unfortunately, the program is for students identify themselves being of Asian/
Pacific Islander American descent. We are about creating a safe space, providing
services, and developing for YOUNG ASIANS WITH POWER. The struggle of
oppressed peoples is a multi-pronged, protracted fight for social justice, and
we take on our part fully and responsibly. With limited resources and fighting
an on-going history of invisibility and misrepresentation, YAWP must remain
for-Asians-by-Asians as much as it is for-youth-by-youth. Familiarize yourself
with the term, ALLY.
I live (insert very far place here). I'm not sure if I can make it by 4:30pm.
Are all the workshops going to be held in Uptown? How the heck to I get
there from (insert very far place here)?
Given the limited time (three hours) and limited sessions this Summer (10), we
will start each session promptly at 4:30pm. In the past we have given rides home
after classes, and occasionally picked up students from the (metra) train station.
We encourage public transportation, as the workshop space is walking distance
from the Argyle Red Line stop, in the heart of Uptown. Basically, if you can get to
the space by 4:30pm, we can get you back home safe and sound.
It's the summer! No more homework already. Am I going to have to read a lot and
do a lot of writing?
1) It is a writing workshop, silly. You will have to write in the workshops. Revision
of work outside of the workshop time only helps develop better writing. You will
have help from your buddy/mentor, so don't worry.
2) You cannot become a better writer without becoming a ferocious reader. We will
cover various material in the sessions and assign light outside reading, most of
which is optional. Our reading material covers work from Ai to Zarco, poetry to
non-fiction, and we will make sure to choose work that is both applicable and not
boring. We understand your workload, and are not trying to kill your interest in the
arts, but help it along.
When and how am I going to eat? Is food provided?
Occasionally, we might provide food, but for the most part, we hope that students
come prepared for the workshops and eat on their own time before 4:30pm or after 8pm.
So all this is free? What about field trips?
Yes, all the sessions are free. From time to time, opportunities will come up for field
trips to performances, both in Chicago and out-of-state. Last summer, we took a
number of YAWPers to Minneapolis, MN for the National Poetry Slam and the Singers
of Daybreak Writer's Conference. Any large Chicago and out-of-state trips may have
additional costs for tickets, transportation, and/or lodging. We will provide as much
funding as humanly possible, and will give ample notice of additional costs. Ever
think about becoming a sponsor?
