Highlights for this summer’s YAWP!:

*this summer we’re working on not only the writing of our stories but also the performance of our words. we’re going back to the informal workshop format where you’ll be able to work on your writing; learn to be comfortable performing and reading your works; and learn about our collective history and struggles through the words and images of those who have come before us.

*this summer we’re also coming together with “Performing Legacy” a writing workshop which Anida Yoeu Esguerra developed specifically to address the needs of Cambodian American youth. Performing Legacy is a group of young Cambodian Americans who all took a risk in sharing stories, songs, and dreams with each other. Through performance games, exercises, and writing prompts, youth learned to unravel and capture the unique details of their lives in order to better appreciate their extraordinary power as young people.

*MENTORS: you’ll be working with apia artists and youthworkers from the community --multi-talented peoples including: poets, performers, musicians, singers, activists, clowns, those-of-us-full-of-useless-facts, websurfers, film connoisseurs, and all around swell people! we will all be learning from one another!

*your poetry/words published and bounded into a chapbook!

*you’ll get a chance to perform your work near the end of the session at one of our benefits to be held at a café or theater space in Chicago

*Snacks will be provided for the YAWP sessions.

*Road Trip to the bi-annual National APIA Spoken Word & Poetry Summit, held this year in Boston; we’re fundraising to make this happen; we’ll be connecting with APIA youth, youthworkers, as well as poets/writers/performers from all over the country!!! Get ready ‘cuz the summit has always been an inspiring gathering! The dates for the caravan will be August 16 – 22, 2005.
